On Friday, September 20th, Railroad Square Cinema will host an opening event for the Art in the Lobby show “Outside from the Inside: The Prison Art of Marius Mason.”
Fifth Estate staff member Peter Werbe will bring greetings from Marius, singer/songwriter David Rovics will perform, and Leslie James Pickering from Buffalo’s Burning Books bookstore, former spokesperson for the Earth Liberation Front from 1997 to 2002, will speak about Marius Mason and Earth Liberation.
Marius Mason is an anarchist, and environmental and animal rights activist serving a 22 year sentence for committing acts of environmental sabotage. Threatened with a life sentence in 2009, Marius pleaded guilty to arson charges at a Michigan State University lab researching genetically modified organisms for Monsanto, and admitted to 12 other acts of property damage. No one was harmed in these actions.
Marius came out as transgender in 2014. Previously known as “Marie Mason,” he changed his name, uses he/him pronouns, and embarked on a course seeking gender affirming surgery and hormone therapy.
During his imprisonment, Marius has become an accomplished artist, painting themes reflecting his concern for the environment and social justice. Although working mostly in acrylics, when denied his favorite medium, he quickly improvised using only available elements such as deodorant, margarine, and toothpaste.
His work not only speaks to a passion for defending the planet and its inhabitants, but also his indomitable spirit to create images that reflect his love, his sadness, and support for what is being lost.
Free and open to the public. Light snacks and libations will be served. More info: mainefilmcenter.org/art-in-the-lobby
