A young boy kills his sister on Halloween of 1963 and is sent to a mental hospital. 15 years later he escapes and returns to his home town in order to wreak havoc. Scary, suspenseful, and viscerally thrilling, John Carpenter’s HALLOWEEN set the standard for modern horror films. HALLOWEEN premiered on October 25th, 1978, not in Los Angeles with a big event at Mann’s Chinese Theater — instead, it opened in Kansas City. It did quite well in KC and then opened up in Chicago, followed by showings in New York. From there, it had a platform release across the country, playing in different cities at different times. 40 years later, the movie has made its money back more than 200 times, earning it the title of the most successful independent horror movie of all time.
